The top edges of the cards should meet, and the bottom edges should be evenly spaced apart from a central axis. Spend some time practicing this process.

You'll need to repeat it over and over again in the construction of your house. Build the foundation. Create a steady line of triangular trusses, two cards each.

The point of each triangle should be no more than one card's length from the point of the next triangle. The number of triangles in the foundation determines the possible height of your house of cards: each "floor" will be built upon one less triangle than the floor below.

For instance, if you build a three-triangle foundation, you'll be able to go up three "floors" before the house reaches a point; if you build a six-triangle foundation, you'll have more space to build, and you'll be able to go up six floors.

Start with a three-floor house. Brace each new triangle against the base of the adjacent triangle. Eventually, you should have three triangles using six cards, total that are all touching.

Brace the triangles. Gently lay a flat card on top of the first two triangles say, 1 and 2. Make sure that the card is perfectly balanced between the points.

Now, lay another card between Triangles 2 and 3. You should have a "foundation" of three triangles with two flat cards on top. This takes eight cards, total.

Build the next layer of cards. If your foundation comprises three triangles, the next "floor" up should use two triangles. Try to stack each new triangle at the same angle as the two triangles below, for the sake of structural integrity.

Place the base of each card above the point of a lower triangle. When you have formed these two triangles, lay one flat card on top between their points.

If you built the foundation well, it should be strong enough to hold up these new cards — but you will need to keep from knocking the whole thing over with a tremble or sudden movement.

Stack the new cards lightly and cautiously. When you've finished laying the second "floor", your tower should comprise thirteen cards: five triangles and three flat cards.

Add the point. To complete your house of cards, you just need to stack one more triangle atop the structure. Slowly and carefully prop two cards together at the same angle as all of the prior triangles.

Hold them in place until they are completely even, and pull your hands away when you feel confident that the point will stand on its own.

If the structure stands, you have built a house of cards! Method 2 of Form the cell. First, arrange two cards into a slightly-off-center "T".

Hold the cards, one in each hand, so that their flat faces are perpendicular to the table. Lean them against each other to form another almost-T. Next, place a third card against the middle of one card to form another "T".

Close the box with a fourth card and "T", so you have four cards pressed against each other with a square space in the center.

This is the basic four-card cell or "lock box". It is one of the most structurally stable foundations that you can lay for your house of cards.

Think of this cell as a pattern that you can repeat throughout your design. Build a "roof" or "ceiling". Before the series was reissued in to coincide with the release of the US version of House of Cards , Dobbs rewrote portions of the novel to bring the series in line with the television mini-series and restore continuity among the three novels.

The first installment of the TV series coincidentally aired two days before the Conservative Party leadership election.

The series, produced and financed by independent studio Media Rights Capital , is one of Netflix 's first forays into original programming.

Series one was made available online on 1 February It also earned nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning three, and was the first show to earn nominations that was broadcast solely via an internet streaming service.

The drama introduced and popularised [4] the phrase: "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment". It was a non-confirmation confirmative statement, used by Urquhart whenever he could not be seen to agree with a leading statement, with the emphasis on either the "I" or the "possibly", depending on the situation.

A variation on the phrase was written into the TV adaptation of Terry Pratchett 's Hogfather for the character Death , as an in-joke on the fact that he was voiced by Richardson.

During the first Gulf War, a British reporter speaking from Baghdad, conscious of the possibility of censorship, used the code phrase "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment" to answer a BBC presenter's question.

A further variation was used by Nicola Murray, a fictional government minister, in the third series finale of The Thick of It. In the U.

Dashing, cunning, methodical and vicious, Frank Underwood along with his equally manipulative yet ambiguous wife, Claire, take Washington by storm through climbing the hierarchical ladder to power in this Americanized recreation of the BBC series of the same name.

Written by Jacob Oberfrank. I love spectacular TV-shows with amazing production values like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, but I have to say: although House of Cards has little interest in jaw-dropping images or gruesome make-up effects, it delivers just as many dark thrills to keep you glued to your seat as the action-heavy flagships of HBO and AMC.

It's a testament to the writers', directors' and actors' talents that a show which mostly consists of people talking is as much a prime candidate for binge- watching as the shows I've mentioned before, so for those of you who haven't started watching it yet, be warned: House of Cards is highly addictive.

The show is based on the acclaimed BBC mini-series of the same name from , but while the original show focused on the inner workings of British politics, the remake is entirely US based and concentrates on the rise of power-hungry congressman Francis Underwood who is played by Kevin Spacey.

On the surface, the show might appear to be a political drama - which it certainly is - but it's also so much more than that.

House of Cards combines a vast number of genres; it's a thriller, a love story, a black comedy and a satire - and a very interesting lesson in US politics, which, given creator Beau Willimon's profound knowledge on the subject he used to work as a campaign aid for Hillary Clinton, Bill Bradley and Howard Dean , is probably a lot more accurate than what we would like to believe.

It's also worth mentioning that House of Cards was heavily inspired by certain works of William Shakespeare. The character of Francis Underwood is a combination of Richard III and Macbeth, and in true Shakespeare manner, he often addresses the audience directly to inform us of his evil schemes.

As in the bard's two famous plays, the villain is also the protagonist and - to a certain degree - the person you root for.

And what makes him so much fun and so compelling to watch here, is - regardless what you think of him as a person - Kevin Spacey's performance.

Spacey's portrayal of a charming but deadly predator is simply perfect; despite the character's obvious willingness to go to extreme lengths to get what he wants, Spacey always keeps him believable and avoids the temptation of making him appear like a caricature or as over-the-top as Richard III in the play.

But many of his co-stars are just as impressive; some of them actually downright outshine the famous oscar-winner, and especially Robin Wright gives an amazing performance as Underwood's equally ambitious wife and partner in crime yes, season 6 is a let-down, especially the final episode, but that's not Wright's fault.

To sum up my overall impressions: Under the guidance of David Fincher who serves as an executive producer on the show and also directed the first couple of episodes , Beau Willimon has developed one of the smartest and most entertaining TV-shows - with one of the most impressive casts - contemporary television has to offer.

Seasons are highly recommended. Looking for some great streaming picks? Check out some of the IMDb editors' favorites movies and shows to round out your Watchlist.

If you built the foundation well, it should be strong enough to hold up these new cards — but you will need to keep from knocking the whole thing over with a tremble or sudden movement.

Overlap two cards flat on top of your four-card cell.

Then, lay two more flat cards rotated at a degree angle to complete the roof. A "double-ply" flat layer will make your eventual structure much more stable.

Add a second story. Carefully construct a second four-card cell on top off the flat layer. You now have a stable two-story card structure.

Feel free to keep adding stories until you run out of cards, or until you think the structure is tall enough. The four-card cell is a very strong root, so you should be able to stack many levels atop the foundation.

Try adding "wings" to the house by attaching more T-shapes to the ground floor. Whenever you put down a card shape that is perpendicular to the table surface, make sure to lay a flat card layer on top as a "ceiling".

This will make the cards more structurally sound, and it will make the whole building look more like a house.

Get creative. The sky's the limit with this method — so see how big of a house you can build! Method 3 of Use cheap cards. Expensive pro-quality cards are usually smooth and glossy, and they are prone to slipping apart.

Cheaper cards tend to be grainier and less slippery, and thus better for sticking together. Choose your surface carefully.

Pick a safe, sturdy space that will not shift while you're stacking cards. Try building upon a slightly textured surface, like a billiards table or an unfinished wood table.

A smooth surface like a glass table could cause your cards to slip. Consider using a tablecloth or a place-mat to add texture to a smooth surface — but be aware that these unfixed foundations are prone to shift unexpectedly.

Make sure that there isn't a draft! Build your house of cards indoors, away from open windows, doors, fans, and vents. You don't want to lose all of your hard work to a ill-timed gust of wind.

Stay calm. A shaky hand or a sudden twitch can make your house crumble. Hold each card gently but firmly between two fingers of your dominant hand.

Try to "float" it smoothly into place. Try placing cards when you are between breaths, or at the "bottom of your breath" — in the moment just after you exhale.

Take deep breaths, and pay attention to the brief space that occurs between exhalation and inhalation. Your body is at its stillest during this moment, and you may find it easier to keep your hand steady.

If you're balancing them on top of a shaped structure, try licking the bottom edge. It really works to help them stick.

Not Helpful 31 Helpful First, get two cards. Then hold one card in your right hand with your index finger and thumb and the other card in your left hand with your index finger and thumb use middle finger if needed.

Just make sure your base is large, stay calm, and keep trying! Not Helpful 21 Helpful Use thin triangles, they are sturdier and they can be spaced out easier.

Not Helpful 16 Helpful Should the triangles be touching each other for balance when building a house of cards? That can work, but if they touch each other, it's easier to knock them over.

It's better to do thin, slightly spaced out triangles. Not Helpful 14 Helpful Yes, it is. It is really easy because it uses simple triangles, and they are pretty sturdy.

Hold the first card as you add on the second, then shift to holding the second as you're adding the third, and so on. What you should do is hold onto cards until you find the balance point.

Not Helpful 29 Helpful I cannot make more than two layers for the cell. What is the best way to make it sturdy? Jose Sanchez. To make your house of cards sturdy, make sure you are building it on a firm foundations.

To make it extra sturdy, try gluing the cards together to make the house stronger. Once you glue them together, you can build it however tall you want.

Note that this makes it difficult to play go fish with the cards after. Not Helpful 19 Helpful Not Helpful 9 Helpful Include your email address to get a message when this question is answered.

You shouldn't use glue, tape, staples, paper clips, or any other fasteners. Don't bend the cards to make them hang onto each other, make notches in the cards to fit them together.

All of the above are ways to 'cheat', and you're otherwise not actually accomplishing anything. Mattie has an apparent Electra complex ; she finds appeal in Urquhart's much older age and later refers to him as "Daddy".

Another unwitting pawn is Roger O'Neill Miles Anderson , the party's cocaine -addicted public relations consultant.

Urquhart blackmails O'Neill into leaking information on budget cuts that humiliates Collingridge during the Prime Minister's Questions.

Later, he blames party chairman Lord "Teddy" Billsborough Nicholas Selby for leaking an internal poll showing a drop in Tory numbers, leading Collingridge to sack him.

He also poses as Collingridge's alcoholic brother Charles James Villiers to trade shares in a chemical company about to benefit from advance information confidential to the government.

Consequently Collingridge becomes falsely accused of insider trading and is forced to resign. In the ensuing leadership race, Urquhart initially feigns unwillingness to stand before announcing his candidacy.

With the help of his underling, Tim Stamper Colin Jeavons , Urquhart goes about making sure his competitors drop out of the race: Health Secretary Peter MacKenzie Christopher Owen accidentally runs his car over a disabled protester at a demonstration staged by Urquhart and is forced by the public outcry to withdraw, while Education Secretary Harold Earle Kenneth Gilbert is blackmailed into withdrawing when Urquhart anonymously sends pictures of him in the company of a rent boy whom Earle had paid for sex.

Urquhart eliminates Woolton by a prolonged scheme: at the party conference , he pressures O'Neill into persuading his personal assistant and lover, Penny Guy Alphonsia Emmanuel , to have a one-night stand with Woolton in his suite, which Urquhart records via a bugged ministerial red box.

When the tape is sent to Woolton, he is led to assume that Samuels is behind the scheme and backs Urquhart in the contest. Urquhart also receives support from Collingridge, who is unaware of Urquhart's role in his own downfall.

Samuels is forced out of the running when the tabloids reveal that he backed leftist causes as a student at University of Cambridge.

Stumbling across contradictions in the allegations against Collingridge and his brother, Mattie begins to dig deeper.

On Urquhart's orders, O'Neill arranges for her car and flat to be vandalised in a show of intimidation. However, O'Neill becomes increasingly uneasy with what he is being asked to do, and his cocaine addiction adds to his instability.

Urquhart mixes O'Neill's cocaine with rat poison, causing him to kill himself when taking the cocaine in a motorway lavatory. Though initially blind to the truth of matters thanks to her relations with Urquhart, Mattie eventually deduces that Urquhart is responsible for O'Neill's death and is behind the unfortunate downfalls of Collingridge and all of Urquhart's rivals.

Mattie looks for Urquhart at the point when it seems his victory is certain. She eventually finds him on the roof garden of the Houses of Parliament , where she confronts him.

He admits to O'Neill's murder and everything else he has done. He then asks whether he can trust Mattie, and, though she answers in the affirmative, he does not believe her and throws her off the roof onto a van parked below.

An unseen person picks up Mattie's tape recorder, which she had been using to secretly record her conversations with Urquhart.

The series ends with Urquhart defeating Samuels in the second leadership ballot and being driven to Buckingham Palace to be invited to form a government by Elizabeth II.

Before the series was reissued in to coincide with the release of the US version of House of Cards , Dobbs rewrote portions of the novel to bring the series in line with the television mini-series and restore continuity among the three novels.
