It was filmed in Luxembourg , and is a loose retelling of the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In the Minoan Bronze Age , a shadow loomed over the village of Thena.
Every three years, under King Deucalion 's order, eight youths are taken from the village to the capital of the Minos' Empire.
There, they are placed in an underground labyrinth to be sacrifices to the Minotaur , the Minoan god. Theo, son of Cyrnan, the village chieftain, is haunted by the loss of his love, Fion, in an earlier sacrifice.
A leprous prophetess tells him that Fion is still alive in the labyrinth. Against his father's wishes, he replaces one of the sacrifices and is taken to the Minos Empire capitol.
After the group are dropped into the labyrinth, the Minotaur immediately begins hunting them and kills Nan. The survivors are approached by Queen Raphaella , Deucalion's sister and unwilling lover , who offers them a way out.
Vena does not believe her, and when she attempts to leave the group, the Minotaur impales her in the back of her head with its horn.
The rest of the group evade the Minotaur and, led by Raphaella, they get to a chamber at the center of the labyrinth.
There, the monster lies asleep on its victims' remains, and a heavy wooden door leads out of the labyrinth. Raphaella had arranged for her servant Ramaya to open the door from the other side, but Deucalion catches the servant and has her executed.
Desperate, the group attempt to break down the door. The noise wakes the Minotaur, which kills Ziko and splits up the group.
Theo, Danu, and Morna encounter Turag, a villager from a previous offering. Turag has managed to elude the Minotaur thus far, but has become slightly insane over the years.
Looking at the map of the labyrinth Turag has drawn, Theo learns of Fion's supposed location and goes off alone to find her, but only finds her corpse, poisoned by an underground gas deposit.
Meanwhile, Tyro and Didi find one of the holes that they were dropped through. Tyro climbs up and reaches down to pull up Didi.
As the Minotaur arrives, Didi panics, loses her grip and falls onto one of its horns. The Minotaur then corners Danu and Morna, and Danu sacrifices himself to save his lover.
Raphaella reaches Theo again and explains the Minotaur's origin. Her mother gave herself to bestiality to create a living god, and gave birth to the Minotaur.
I want to especially single out the script because it is SO BAD I can't believe anyone seriously considered it for production. Total paint-by-numbers writing, and here those numbers don't exceed three.
And the other dialogue It makes me cry when I see movies like this, because I take it as further proof against the existence of a kind and loving God.
What's wrong with these people? These movie makers, they think they can be creative and change myth and classic cartoons to suit their "vision".
Where there vision is blurry and need glasses. If you want to be creative, then write something new, you don't go around messing with classic Greek stories.
The minotaur is part man and part bull. Which mean he walks on two feet and has hands. What happened to his eyes? There was a flashback when the minotaur was born and he had eyes.
Just because something or someone goes blind from decades in total darkness doesn't mean his eyes fall out and where is his lips?
Is this Minotaur alive or some kind of Zombull? The acting and story works, but the whole minotaur thing truly destroys the experience for me.
One, fur on flesh, two walks up right and three has lips and eyes. The changes totally ruin this movie and I feel anyone who knows the slightest bit of Greek myth will feel the same, it's quite obvious the makers knew nothing of Greek Myth or of Minotaurs.
This movie is absolutely not enjoyable. Idiot that I was, I actually believed it. They probably hired one of the Orc extra's from LOTR to be able to put that on the cover or something.
The movie starts out promising enough, some sort of mythological mumbo-jumbo story about an evil empire that worships the Minotaur.
What's this? Full frontal nudity already? They don't waste time, do they. And the the movie starts. Very slowly.
We meet some stupid kids who are on their way to be sacrificed. Some guy, high on drugs, uses his magic skull to get the women high.
They proceed to tongue kiss his sister, and each other, passionately. What exactly was the point of that? Yes, exactly, to give the viewer a boner.
Almost immediately after that, the sister seduces our hero and gets him into bed. And then I turned off the DVD-player and went on to do something else.
This movie is boring, uses cheap tactics to try and keep the viewers attention They butcher the mythology of the Minotaur story to make this Do not watch this film unless you are drunk, horny pun intended or enjoy watching bad movies.
I expected a solid B-flick and I ended up having more than desired. I didn't care much for the atmosphere or technical aspects of the movie because the plot was really interesting and fast paced.
Please give this movie a try if you enjoy mythological related movies with monsters, princesses, and solid action sequences.
Recommended for b-movie lovers. Minotaur - the word itself explains most of the entire movie. As it happened, my girlfriend bought the DVD-release at a local rental-store used DVD , and thought it would be a good one.
The introduction and start of the movie makes it feel like at least a partly good one, though during its continuation, it clearly shines through as what it really is: A piece of utter wasted time and money.
Do not buy or watch this movie, it's so bad you sit there thinking if you should have done the dishes or mopped the floor instead - as that would really give more excitement than this flop.
To sum it up: if one could give a movie a dice-throw instead of the rating, I would not even have thrown the dice. Let me start out by saying that a I like the SciFi channel, and fantasy and scifi in general those reading my other reviews might conclude that I only like French and Japanese films, and that is not the case and b I do not have any bias against TV movies.
What I do have a bias against is flimsy and witless hack job rearrangements of classics--including classic myth. There is a point of view that every possible genre of literature was invented by the Greeks and we have just been ringing changes ever since; so there in nothing wrong with re-imagining the classics--Jean Cocteau's films, "Clueless" on Jane Austen, John Gardner's "Grendell", Kurosawa's "Ran" and "Throne of Blood", much of Roger Corman's work, and numerous others.
But in this case, bad dialogue, bad acting this film makes, say, "Conan the Barbarian" look like the Royal Shakespeare Company and a plot that, charitably, has little to do with the original and everything to do with being a framework for skimpy clothing and a bucket or two of gore, matched with an excessive enthusiasm for point of view camera work, all combine to make this a heap of as a good friend of mine says stinking poo.
Don't waste your time and effort on this. Guys--recognize a stinker when you see one. His father, Cyrnan, Rutger Hauer the village elder, doesn't approve and demands that he keep out of it when they arrive.
He manages to get captured anyway, and his taken to the palace of the king, Deucalion, Tony Todd who throws them into a pit where their God, the Minotaur, awaits.
As Theo reveals that he has come to kill the Minotaur instead of their other reasons, he sets out to stop the bull.
By keeping the film set during the time of the original myth about the Minotaur, it avoids the pitfall of many of the other ones they've done by using the original story and it's scares as the basis for this one.
Most of the fear in that one was attributed to the labyrinth, and the danger of not knowing which person was next to go.
Here, it works that way as well, but also for a just as exciting reason. The early scenes in the Minotaur lair are the film's creepiest moments, with the dead air, crazily designed maze, and a general sense of unease that they aren't that safe.
It's the perfect setting for this kind of film that is pretty straight forward with the myth of the creature, and it doesn't take too many liberties.
The creature looks half-way decent, a step up from the usual work they've done before. The hell-spawned bull look works for the film, giving the Minotaur a more thrilling look and design that a lot of people wouldn't have considered.
There is some impressive kills as well, included the one that gets the biggest jump, where a character is giving a speech and the bull's horn impales them through the mouth.
Several are gored upon it's horns or mauled savagely, leading to some impressive set-pieces. The Bad News: The main thing I want to gripe about is that the great Tony Todd, who does have a great role here, isn't given that much to do.
He basically just stands around, spouting pseudo-poetic lines while trying to be menacing, and it just doesn't work come off that great from the actor.
His role is important, but it shouldn't have been him in it, as we expect so much more from the man. Other than that, there isn't much I want to complain about here, as this is one of the better ones from the Sci-Fi Channel.
The Final Verdict: This is one of the Sci-Fi Channel's better films, as it tries a couple of new tricks in their usual repertoire and come out with an average film among their other credits.
All the Sci-Fi fans will want to check it out, but fans of Tony will probably think twice, as he has been miscast in this one.
Rated R: Graphic Violence, Nudity and hints of incest. The legend of the Minotaur originated in antiquity when first related by the great storyteller Homer.
Now in modern times several movies have been created and I've seen five. From among them all, this is the very best. The tale is retold here and it tells of a peoples who lined the Mediterranean and fell under the tyrannical power of King Minos, who was cursed When he offended the Gods and who in return was punished by them.
He had asked for a son, but was instead given one who fed on Human flesh. Each year, the king sent his warships throughout the land and forced his vassals to give him tribute in the form of young boys and young girls to be fed to his son the Minotaur.
However, Theseus, the half-son of Zues volunteered to be among the victims and offers himself to the group to be sacrificed.
Unlike others stories where the King's daughter fell in love with the heroic youth, this version is flagrantly dark and there is much violence, blood and gore to satisfy action oriented audiences.
The film is more violent than others, but it's necessary to meet the requirements of advance theater goers. The star of this film is handsome, Tom Hardy who plays Theo or Thesus.
Tony Todd is Deucalion the tyrant king who plays it to the hilt. There is a great deal of violence as I said, but it goes hand in hand with fiery, dark caverns, the amazing Minotaur and especially the explosive finally.
Take it from me, this version will become a Classic and thus I recommend it enthusiastically to one and all. Perverse, the movie was perverse with the strange "exotic" nasty clothes they wore, the lesbian kiss?
In ancient Greece? Incorrect: Wikipedia quote: "at nine-year intervals, seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls were to be sent to Crete to be devoured by the Minotaur" The movie states 8 "youngsters" every third year.
How come the village has been raided 5 times already, and the movie states: northern territory, foolish plot! Marriage between sister and brother is a ancient Egyptian tradition.
Sub Saharan African actors as Minoans? How stupid can you be? Whats next? Far East Asian Vikings? North American natives as Samurais?
Eskimos acting Zulu warriors? Caucasians in Apocalypto 2? And what is that creature supposed to be a minotaur? A gigantic rat with horns and hooves?
Once upon a time, after Tim Burton let his freak bat-signal fly but before every cape came with a free cinematic universe, superhero movies were a grungy, pulpy business.

And then the Mosswood members would kill the calf, thereby symbolically eradicating those emotions in a supposedly healthy way.
